Pig Workshop Day 2

We completed day two of our pig workshop!

The classes continued to work on their fall leaf project.  Not only is this a fun art project, but it's also a lesson in learning to follow directions and a lesson in patience, as well!  The class glued the sticks onto their paintings, and they will compile them into a single work of art next week.

Each class learned many pig terms today: sow, gilt, boar, farrow, piglet, and more.  We talked about the different breed of pig, and the class was able to hear some funny (and frustrating!) pig stories from the farm!  The older class reviewed the terms with a quick word-find competition.

In the younger class, we discussed pigs in nursery rhymes and stories.  The Three Little Pigs is always the first one they think of!  The class moved all of the chairs out of the room, and each of the three tables became a house: one of straw, one of sticks, and one of brick.  They were all giggles and laughter when we played Laurie Berkner's song version of The Three Little Pigs, acting it out along with the music!  The class (pigs) moved from one house to another, as the Big Bad Wolves huffed and puffed and blew their houses down.  It was a hit!

Each class spent lots of time with our new potbelly "pig ambassadors", Sprinkle and Sprite.  They learned about pigs' cloven hooves, how they have very poor eye sight, how they cannot sweat, and how easily pink pigs can sunburn!  The students also fed the "eating pigs" leftover Halloween pumpkins and other goodies!  They learned about the Ossabaw hogs and their history on Ossabaw Island.  The pigs were very happy for the snack!

 The older class listened as I read the book, Sidney and Norman: A Tale of Two Pigs.  Afterward, we listened as each student shared their writing assignment.  They did a great job!
